Nicaragua: the Inter-oceanic Canal
- Heinz Reinke & Rudi Kurz
- • A chance for development or selling the country short?
- Lecture
For a long time, reports that a long canal would be built between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans were not taken seriously. Initial plans and first steps towards their implementation, however, are now increasingly leading to protests. Whilst those in favour of the canal see it as a long-awaited step towards freedom in the fight against poverty, critics, depending on their social and political backgrounds, thematise a number of economic risks, the possible marginalisation of the last indigenous groups and criticise the proportion of the mega project.
Heinz Reinke and Rudi Kurz from the Heidelberg Nicaragua-Forum will look at these arguments from a number of different perspectives.
Specialists from the fields of Economics and Ecology, as well as individuals from the Nicaraguan population itself, present wide-ranging and contrasting opinions, inviting you to draw your own conclusions about the project!
