US Topics is an excellent resource for teachers looking to bolster their students English language skills. We offer live and pre-recorded lessons in English by native English speakers from the United States to teach about everything from the 2020 Election to Wild West Imaginaries.
Us Topics is excited to offer virtual workshops and live online workshops by our native-English speaking teachers. In order to support teachers during this challenging year due to covid, we’ve developed a variety of workshops offered with live sessions via Zoom, Big Blue Button, etc… and pre-recorded workshops for your students to further hone their English skills.  In addition to our current workshops, we want to know what is relevant in your class!
Therefore, you give us a topic – we design the workshop! Our native English teachers combine group and research work, discussion rounds and presentations to put together an exciting program for you.
Your students will gain intensive insights and in-depth knowledge on the respective topics, while at the same time practicing and refining their English language skills.

Possible topics:

  • American Dream: Is it still alive?
  • Divided States of America
  • Polarization and Social Inequalities
  • Daily Forms of Discrimination
  • Immigration in the US: Changes and Challenges
  • With Liberty and Justice for Some: Exploring Inequalities in the US
  • American Environmentalism and Green Movements
  • US-German Relations
  • Understanding Trumpism and Populism in the US
  • The Rise of the Religious Right
  • The US Political and Electoral System
  • Globalization

Other topics on request.

Duration: 3 hours (in the morning)
Costs: Pre-existing topic 5 € per student minimum 100 €, Personalized topic 6 € per student with 120 € minimum
We look forward to receiving your request by e-mail!

Covid Updates: Please note we’ve developed these online workshops to support distance learning. US Topics is typically offered in person here in the DAI Library as a 3 hour workshop.
Once restrictions lift and it is safe to reconvene in person, we look forward to hosting US Topics in the library again. In addition, our native English speakers can visit your school on request. We are happy to respond to your topic requests and put together an individual package for you. The costs differ and are made up of the duration of the workshop (at least 2 school hours) and the distance between the school and our location in Heidelberg.

NEW: Our digital workshop “The DIVIDED States of America”

Due to the Corona pandemic, workshops at DAI and at your school are currently very limited. We are very pleased to be able to offer you an interactive PowerPoint presentation with video and audio files with our digital workshop for high school students. Ideal for your distance learning as well! Request by e-mail now!

You can work on the presentations individually created by our teachers together with your class in class. Group work as well as open discussions still have a large part in this. In addition to the link to the presentation, as a teacher you will receive a Guide to the Presentation, on which answer options or examples are given and which will guide you through the presentation. Using the Feedback Tool, you and your students will have the opportunity to submit questions and ideas in writing to the respective teacher and receive feedback. Extending the workshops to include a digital Q&A session with our teacher is also possible.

We look forward to receiving your request by e-mail!

Content & Workshop Outline:
The political thriller of the year has ended smoothly, as many see it. Joe Biden is the new president of the USA. However, Donald Trump, with 47.3%, has also been able to rally almost half of the Americans eligible to vote behind him. This shows vividly how strong the division of the USA actually is.
