- What does experience mean?
- The Connections between body and soul
- Geist Heidelberg, Lecture
Experience means intuitive knowledge, ken and ability. Put simply, it means practical knowledge that we have come to consider as self-evident. Experience is therefore part of our body memory, a part of the memory responsible for remembering practiced movements, habits and familiar situations. Experience refers therefore not to that which we experience only once, or which we remember, but to repeated experiences. The lifelong plasticity of our body memory allows us to adapt to our natural and cultural surroundings. To be experienced in something, to understand something, means to have had physical experience of it.
Thomas Fuchs, born in 1958, has been a Karl-Jaspers Professor for the Philosophical Aspects of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University of Heidelberg, since 2010.
