  • Opportunities and limits of diplomacy

The UN, NATO and the EU – organizations that helped to secure peace after the Second World War – are suffering from a loss of credibility and are facing internal trials. There is no way to carry on as before. New alliances are needed, as a great power like the USA is playing out its (supposed) strength in a new way.
Martin Kobler sees this attack on the existing world order as an opportunity for the EU to develop new appeal and remain true to its values. This evening is an invitation to discuss the power and powerlessness of diplomacy with the experienced diplomat. A short lecture will be followed by a discussion with the audience in the American style of a “town hall meeting”.

Martin Kobler, former German ambassador to Pakistan, Iraq and Egypt, teaches international diplomacy at the German Armed Forces Command and Staff College. He worked for the UN in Afghanistan, the Congo, Iraq and Libya and headed the German representation office in Palestine from 1994-1997.
