Óscar Hahn und Walter Eckel

Óscar Hahn, son of German immigrants born in Northern Chile in 1938, is one of Latin America’s most renowned contemporary poets. Walter Eckel has translated Hahn’s poetry into German – 2012 saw the publication of, “Liebe unter den Ruinen”, and in 2013, “Der Regenpassagier”(Rimbaud Verlag) was published.

Hahn was working as a Professor of Literature Pedagogy, when he emigrated to America following the military putsch of 1973. For more than 30 years he taught Latin American Literature at the University of Iowa. In 2009, he returned to Chile. The themes which remain constant throughout his fragmented biography are the same as those addressed in his poetry: love, death, transience, art, music, philosophy and eroticism. Topped-off by the fantastical and the supernatural.

Dr Walter Eckel is the Managing director of the Heidelberg Center for Latin America, Center of Excellence in Research and Teaching at the University of Heidelberg, in Santiago de Chile.

Following a short introduction, selected poems will be presented in German and Spanish.
