Musical Sunday

  • Johann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg Variations BWV 988
  • Marcus Imbsweiler & Timo Jouko Herrmann
  • In dialogue, Literature

There are variations for piano in abundance. But few are as comprehensive as Bach’s “Goldberg Variations”: they not only dress up the original theme in various guises such as sarabande, toccata, overture and minuet, but also offer an insight into the high art of polyphony. And last but not least, they are a celebration of virtuosity, to be mastered only by the best. It is hard to believe that this music, as legend has it, served as a sleeping aid for a Russian nobleman. But the “Goldberg Variations” are certainly an ideal subject for a wide-awake conversation at Musical Sunday!

Two music enthusiasts immerse themselves in the works with the audience in a deep and lively way: Marcus Imbsweiler publishes novels, including stories about composers. Timo Jouko Herrmann is a composer, violinist and guest conductor of the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra.
