Can we save species from extinction by optimizing their genes? Can we create genetically modified plants that are protected against any external influence at all times? Evolution shows: diversity is more important than optimized adaptation; it is not the strongest that survives, but the one that is best adapted to its environment, that reacts quickly and wisely to new challenges.
The cells, organisms and species that exist today embody biological intelligence (BI), which is similar to artificial intelligence. Their diversity and complexity allow different species to find their own responses to new challenges. To protect biodiversity, principles of avoidance must be applied.
Dr. Christoph Then is a veterinarian and has been involved in genetic engineering and biotechnology for 30 years. He is the managing director of Testbiotech, an independent institute dealing with the risk assessment of genetically modified organisms.
