What is slimy, has 720 genders and made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest single-celled organism? A creature called “Blob,” a previously unknown species that is neither plant nor animal and, according to current research, promises major scientific breakthroughs: decontamination of soils, new antibiotics, more effective cancer therapies or even optimization of networks.
Without mouth, eyes or stomach, the “blob” can see and eat. Cut into pieces, he heals in two minutes. He can reproduce on his own, communicate, solve puzzles, and has different “personalities” even though he has no brain. Completely without limbs, he moves and adjusts his size precisely to his surroundings. Time to learn more about this amazing single-celled organism!
Behavioral biologist Dr. Audrey Dussutour has been researching the “Protozoa of the Year 2021” for over a decade at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in Toulouse.
