Stephan Bierling

“E pluribus unum” – out of many, one: this is the motto of the US coat of arms. But there is not much left of it. The United States is more divided and hostile than it has been since the Civil War. The main reason for this is the partisan polarization that has now affected all actors, institutions and processes of American democracy. Stephan Bierling analyzes why the political system is functioning less and less well and how the country could break out of the ongoing political confrontation.

Prof. Dr. Stephan Bierling is Head of International Politics at the University of Regensburg. He regularly analyzes the global security and economic order as well as US domestic and foreign policy for TV, radio and the press and advises politicians and companies. Bierling has held visiting professorships in the USA, Israel, South Africa and Australia. In 2003, he received the Bavarian State Prize for Good Teaching, and in 2013 he was named Professor of the Year in a Germany-wide competition. Die Unvereinigten Staaten (2024) is his latest book.
