  • How the Ocean Connects
  • Geist Heidelberg, Lecture

The ocean connects continents and climate systems, habitats, and societies. Marine scientist Antje Boetius highlights the central role the oceans play in life on Earth: as climate regulators, as habitats, and as a global network of ecological processes—from the surface to the deep sea. In keeping with the festival’s theme , “Across Borders,” the finale focuses on the diverse interconnections between the ocean and humanity, science and responsibility. An evening exploring the significance of the oceans in an era of ecological change—and how closely our future is linked to the future of the oceans.

Prof. Dr. Antje Boetius is a marine biologist and one of the world’s most prominent researchers in the field of polar and deep-sea research. Since 2025, she has served as president of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California, one of the world’s leading centers for ocean research.
