Rock Poetry – Tom Waits Sat, 9th March 2024, 8:00 pm Udo Dahmen & Alexander Menden Literature “Tom is a weird bird, but in a good way.” (Robert Altman) According to Alexander Menden, nobody has disenchanted America as enchantingly as Tom Waits. Drunken voice, disheveled hair, rumpled suit – Tom Waits’ public appearances are part of his production. But the really great thing about him are his magical anthems and the lyrics, which are often about outsiders and are often great poetry. Many rock songs are actually “settings” of great poetic texts and political commentaries. This series is dedicated to this special form of literature. Famous rock poets and their lyrics are presented in loose succession – including music recordings, of course! Prof. Udo Dahmen, author, drummer and director of the Popakademie Mannheim from 2003 to 2023, talks about Tom Waits with Alexander Menden, editor of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and its cultural correspondent in the UK from 2004 to 2018.
