- Edward Elgar: Cello Concerto in E minor op. 85
- Marcus Imbsweiler & Timo Jouko Herrmann
- Literature
Edward Elgar is the composer of the Pomp and Circumstances March, the protagonist of Victorian grandeur and solemnity. But Elgar is also a melancholic, a man full of self-doubt, whose scores can be full of question marks. His Cello Concerto in E minor, begun in the last year of the war in 1918, is a prime example of this. Not only the political events were reflected in the music, but also the concern for his sick wife Alice and the knowledge of the fragility of a humane culture. And so the work is covered in a varnish of melancholy; a farewell in which the solo instrument becomes the voice of the composer.
Two music enthusiasts immerse themselves in the works with the audience in a deep and at the same time lively way: Marcus Imbsweiler publishes novels, including stories about composers. Timo Jouko Herrmann is a composer, violinist and guest conductor of the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra.
