George Bailey & Susanne Wiedmann
- John Cranko's pianist
- Literature
The American George Bailey accompanied the training and rehearsals of the Stuttgart Ballet as a pianist for over 40 years. His playing saved the dancers through long, hard days. With heart and dedication, he created a unique atmosphere and preferred to play jazz rather than classical music. In 1972, the legendary choreographer John Cranko brought him into his company, whereupon Bailey became their favorite. World-famous choreographers such as John Neumeier and Maurice Béjart only wanted to work with him as a pianist. Bailey’s first stop in Germany, however, was Heidelberg.
In her biography Cranko, Haydée – und ich, George Bailey (2021), cultural journalist Susanne Wiedmann tells his extraordinary life story. Together they will organize the evening with a reading, conversation and live music. George Bailey will play from his rich repertoire on the grand piano.
George Bailey, born in Denver in 1944, grew up in a family of musicians and learned to play the piano from his mother. After studying art and music, he joined the army in Heidelberg. Shortly afterwards, he met John Cranko, who brought him into the company of the Stuttgart Ballet.
