Food as a Source of Power

  • Anita Idel, Valentin Thurn, Jan Spielhagen & Andrea Sonntag

Controlling access to and the distribution of food, is increasingly recognised as a source of power. Who decides what is, or should be eaten? Slow food, fast food?

It is generally assumed that anyone who chooses to eat meat has little regard for the well-being of animals. Whoever leads a vegan lifestyle is changing consumer behaviour. On the other hand, meat consumption is part of our cultural and social lifestyle. Do we want to achieve individual changes or do we dare to change the system?

Anita Idel, veterinary surgeon and expert on sustainable farming, is dedicated to the promotion of species-appropriate and holistic animal rearing practices. She is a member of the advisory board for The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD).

In his new film, “10 Billion – What will we eat tomorrow?” the producer, documentary filmmaker and food-fighter Valentin Thurm asks how exactly the world population will be fed in the future.

Jan Spielhagen is a journalist and chief editor for the German magazines “BEEF“ and “essen & trinken”.

Andrea Sonntag is a consultant on food policy for the World Hunger organisation, “Welthungerhilfe”. Through her work she hopes to draw attention to the global consequences of hunger and malnutrition.

Moderation: Eva Maria Lemke, journalist and host (ZDF Morgenmagazin and WISO).
