The Thing about December
- Donal Ryan
Johnsey is a somewhat strange, young Irish lad. He lives with his parents, absorbed in a world of his own thoughts and dreams.
Then, all at once, everything changes. Johnsey’s parents both die in quick succession, one after the other. Investors arrive in the village wanting to buy up plots of land. But Johnsey, to the great dismay of his neighbours, doesn’t want to sell up. And then Johnsey falls in love. The world has quite suddenly made a grand entrance into Johnsey’s life. Hesitant, shocked, but with increasing confidence, Johnsey begins to take his life into his own hands.
Donal Ryan, born in 1976, studied Civil Engineering and Law in Limerick. Amongst other prizes, his first novel, The Spinning Heart, was awarded The Irish Book Award. He lives with his family in Castleroy, Limerick.
