Can Dündar

  • I met my murderer
  • A journalist and the dark side of power
  • Lecture

In exile in Berlin, journalist Can Dündar receives a letter from the man who was supposed to kill him on behalf of the Turkish secret service. The reason: he knew about secret arms deals and reported on them in the daily newspaper Cumhuriyet in 2015. Dündar, who actually survived an assassination attempt, meets the man who was supposed to assassinate him in Buenos Aires and obtains further explosive information.

In his new book, Dündar provides overwhelming evidence of the involvement of top Turkish government circles in organized crime – a personal and political testimony that emphasizes the ruthlessness of autocratic systems. It emphasizes the indispensable value of the free press at a time when the truth itself is becoming a target in many places.

Can Dündar is a journalist and was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Cumhuriyet. He wrote the column My Turkey for DIE ZEIT and is the founder and editor-in-chief of the opposition platform #Özgürüz (Turkish: “We are free”).
