Klaus Modick

  • Concert without a Poet
  • • Opening of the Literature Autumn festival

Klaus Modick tells the story of the most famous painting from the Worpswede artist colony, Vogeler’s, “Summer Evening (Concert at the Barkenhoff)”. Vogeler produced this artwork at the height of his success and it was widely celebrated as a masterpiece. For Vogeler, however, it was emblematic of his failure on three counts; his marriage was on the brink, his confidence as an artist was waning and his fragile friendship with Rainer Maria Rilke was falling to pieces. In particular, it is the latter which is reflected in the painting. That which had initially drawn Vogeler and Rilke together would now part them. Klaus Modick will provide valuable insights into the story behind Vogeler’s masterpiece.

Klaus Modick, born in 1951, completed his doctoral thesis on Lion Feuchtwanger. Since 1984, he has worked as a freelance author and translator. He has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Bettina-von-Arnim Prize. He currently lives in Oldenburg.
