  • Cancel Culture - End of Enlightenment?
  • Geist Heidelberg, Social Activity

Is Cancel Culture a Threat to Democracy? Through Cancel Culture, alleged misconduct is publicly denounced, resulting in a grotesque normalization of discourse, often mixed with moralizing condemnation. In a democracy, however, it is necessary to allow diversity of opinion, to err, to struggle for the right argument, and to endure strong divergence, according to philosopher Julian Nida-Rümelin. It is all the more important to strengthen political judgment and to defend humanism and enlightenment against intolerance, ignorance, agitation and refusal of discourse. The lecture is a plea for independent thinking.

The renowned German philosopher Prof. Dr. Julian Nida-Rümelin was Minister of State for Culture, teaches at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and is Vice Chairman of the German Ethics Council. He is considered one of the most cited personalities from the German-speaking philosophical landscape.
