An almost surreal encounter with a butterfly sets off a stream of nature writing: In *Rare Earths*, Franz Maciejewski explores the complex interplay and conflict between humans and nature. Free of sentimentality, he recounts the beauty and fragility of a rare earth where life-hungry and desperate earthlings eke out their existence.
Based on the book, Rainer Horcher has created a musical work that is closely interwoven with the text. Together with the HorchArt JazzEnsemble, he produces atmospherically rich, jazzy sounds that reflect the story’s diverse moods.
Dr. Franz Maciejewski is a cultural studies scholar and, as a freelance writer, authors nonfiction books, essays, and literary texts.
Rainer Horcher is a composer, clarinetist, and director of the HorchArt JazzEnsemble.
