Elephants in the middle of Berlin, and there are more and more of them. What’s going on here? They haven’t escaped from the zoo – no, they are a gift from the President of Botswana. He sent 20,000 elephants to the Federal Chancellor after the German government decided to ban the import of hunting trophies, thereby depriving the poor regions of Botswana of their livelihood: “You Europeans want to tell us how to live. Maybe you should try it yourselves …”

Following the huge success of Trophy (2024), Gaea Schoeters writes about the existential issues of global coexistence in her new novel – from a different perspective. Absurd, satirical, full of wit – a pleasure to read and think about!

Gaea Schoeters is a Flemish author, journalist and screenwriter; she has written travelogues, novels, opera libretti, musical theater, plays and a philosophical children’s book. She received the Sabam for Culture literary prize for Trophäe.
