Doris Dörrie never wanted to settle down at home, settle in, put down roots – an “unwilling dweller”. But she has always been fascinated by how others live. In California, she goes on house tours just to imagine other lives in other rooms – and as a filmmaker, she becomes an expert in creating artificial living environments.

But as she describes her parents’ house, the student shacks and the experimental life in the country, one question keeps coming to mind: Where has the space for women gone in all these houses? Has the housewife perhaps become just a woman in a house with others? Dörrie’s book about living is also a book about life.

Doris Dörrie is best known as a filmmaker and director (Men, Cherry Blossoms – Hanami, Greetings from Fukushima among others). For a long time she has also devoted herself intensively to writing; she publishes novels, short stories and autofiction and holds sought-after writing workshops.
