It fell into disrepute when everyone was held responsible for their own happiness and misery. Today society is more deeply divided than ever between rich and poor. Of course, there is a social system that provides compensation. But for this we need a new understanding of solidarity. We should not be content to alleviate material need, but recognize ourselves as human beings in the other person. It is only through this free decision for humanity that a society finds itself together again. Prof. Heinz Bude is a sociologist at the University of Kassel and was head of the research unit “The Society of the Federal Republic of Germany” at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research until 2015.
