Solidarity was once a strong word. It fell into disrepute when everyone was held responsible for their own happiness and misery. Today society is more deeply divided than ever between rich and poor. Of course, there is a social system that provides a balance. But for this we need a new understanding of solidarity. We should not be content with relieving material need, but should recognize ourselves as human beings in others. It is only through this free decision to be a fellow human being that a society finds its way back together.

Prof. Heinz Bude is a sociologist at the University of Kassel. Until 2015, he headed the Research Unit “The Society of the Federal Republic of Germany” at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research.
