solidarity

Solidarity used to be a strong word. It fell into disrepute when everyone was blamed for their own happiness and misery. Today more than ever, society is divided between rich and poor. There is, of course, a social system that creates a balance. But for that we need a new understanding of solidarity. We should not be content with alleviating material need, but should recognize ourselves as human beings in others. Only through this free decision on humanity does a society come together again.

Prof. Heinz Bude is a sociologist at the University of Kassel. Until 2015 he was head of the research unit “The Society of the Federal Republic of Germany” at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research.
