  • The Cardinal's secret mission
  • Literature

There is still peace in Syria. In 2010, the Italian embassy in Damascus receives a barrel of olive oil containing the body of a cardinal. Commissioner Barudi wants to solve the crime; a colleague from Rome is supporting him. On what secret mission was the Cardinal on? What was his relationship with the famous saint of the mountain, a Muslim who refers to the example of Jesus? Then the two fall into the hands of armed Islamists.

Rafik Schami tells of faith and love, superstition and murder and leads into the conflicts of Syrian society – and also into the fate and love of an upright commissioner.

Hardly any other writer can tell his stories and even his novels as imaginatively free as Rafik Schami. The Syrian-German author has been committed to reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis for many years and draws a clear picture of the Arab world in his essays.
