  • "The Elephant in the Room": Why we must always think China!

Digitization, artificial intelligence, supply chain issues, semiconductors, human rights, trade disputes, Covid-19 – all these topics are unthinkable without China. China’s rise in the 1980s and 1990s was relatively quiet. After 9/11, the U.S. focused on Islamist terror, and now China is suddenly the world power that no one can get past. What does that mean for us? How did our image of China come about, what do we need to know? A food for thought.

Manuel Vermeer studied modern and classical sinology in Heidelberg and Shanghai; he has published specialized books on China and India as well as numerous articles, interviews etc.. For more than 25 years he has been supporting European companies in Asia, including strategy, negotiations and communication issues. He advises companies from the DAX, MDAX and TecDAX as well as politicians and numerous economic institutions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Dr. Vermeer has taught and lectured at the East Asia Institute of the HS Ludwigshafen, the University of St. Gallen, and VIT University (Vellore Institute of Technology, India), among others; he is Senior Advisor Asia at Mannheim Business School.
