Jonas Grethlein
- Hope
- Geist Heidelberg, Lecture
“Hope is a feather / That perches in the soul / And sings songs without words.”
What the poet Emily Dickinson put into such graceful words still touches everyone’s relationship to their own life and the world today. But can hope still be considered a source of strength today, or is it not rather an escape from reality? Is it virtue or folly? Wouldn’t it be better to let hope die and finally begin to act in our crisis-ridden times?
A look back at 2,500 years of the history of hope illustrates its timeless relevance. Grethlein allows philosophers, writers, artists, victims and sufferers from all eras to have their say in order to understand how people cope with their uncertain future. In this way, he explores the nature of hope, its origins and the forms in which it appears.
Jonas Grethlein is Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Heidelberg. His research focuses on forms of narrative in Homer.
