Democracy is when parties lose elections, says political scientist Adam Przeworski. What sounds obvious takes on new urgency in view of Donald Trump, who, according to his own announcement, will only accept an election outcome in his favor this time too. Jan-Werner Müller believes it is time to come to an understanding about the foundations of democracy, which include freedom, equality and uncertainty.

Prof. Dr. Jan-Werner Müller, born in 1970, teaches political theory at Princeton University. His political commentaries and essays have appeared in the Guardian and the New York Times, among others; his book Freiheit, Gleichheit, Ungewissheit. How to create democracy? (2021) is considered a classic of contemporary diagnosis.
