Why is it so difficult for Germany to make progress on the transformation of its transport system? What is involved in a real transport turnaround and what does it take? And how do German transport policy developments compare with those in the USA? Transport scientist Heiner Monheim draws a comparison between the two countries. Against the backdrop of climate change, he says, a major shift is needed from road to more efficient modes of transport, in long-distance, regional and local traffic as well as in freight transport.

Prof. Dr. Heiner Monheim is co-owner of the raumkom Institute for Spatial Development and Communication in Trier. He has previously worked in the Ministry of Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Federal Research Institute for Regional Studies and Spatial Planning, and as a professor of applied geography, spatial development and regional planning at the University of Trier.
