“I get the sense that Kushner comes from somewhere where young women are never told what they can and can’t do.” (Jonathan Franzen)

The motorbike enthusiast Reno travels to Manhattan where she hopes to submerge herself in the creative, artist-scene exploding in Soho. In a world where the boundaries between life and art are anything but clear-cut, she finds a great rabble of dreamers, revolutionaries and fantasists.

Rachel Kushner, born in 1968 in Eugene, Oregon, studied literature and creative writing at Berkeley and at the University of Columbia. She works as a copy editor for numerous art and literature magazines. “Flame thrower” is her second novel which follows her debut novel, “Telex to Cuba”. Both books have received nominations for the National Book Award, something which no other author has ever achieved.
