When the movie premiered on October 14th 1926 Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau stood at the height of his career: With Nosferatu he already succeeded in 1922 one of the most important movies of the silent movie era. Three years later The Last Man (1924) launched Murnau’s international career.

But before Murnau finally moved to Hollywood he shot his last movie in Germany – Faust with Emil Jannings as leading actor. In the other leading roles he impersonated the Swedish theater star Gösta Ekman as Faust as well as the at that time still unknown Camilla Horn as Gretchen.
