Exodus

The story of the Exodus from Egypt is one of the greatest tales of humanity. It’s not only a story about freedom from enslavement, but also about the development of the belief in one God.

Jan Assmann traces the story of the Egyptian Exodus from its origins in ancient Egypt into the twentieth century. He unveils his new theory of Monotheism and explains why the tale of the Exodus from Egypt can also be seen as a story about the founding of the modern world.

Jan Assmann is Professor emeritus for Egyptology at the University of Heidelberg and Professor for General Cultural Studies at the University of Konstanz.
