Dag Nikolaus Hasse

  • What is European?
  • On Overcoming Colonial and Romantic Forms of Thought
  • Lecture

We see ourselves as Europeans, but our traditionally anchored idea of European culture is questionable. This is because we carry with us views from the colonial era and from Romanticism that distort our view of history and geopolitical self-image in a Eurocentric way and burden the future of our continent. Dag Nikolaus Hasse encourages more open thinking about Europe, whose intellectual roots and connections to continental neighbors are more intense than many believe.

Dag Nikolaus Hasse, born in 1969, is professor of the history of philosophy at the University of Würzburg. His research is mainly on Arabic philosophy and natural science. Hasse is a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2016.
