Early sixties: Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” gives hope. Young James wants to leave Irish origin and poverty behind and dreams of a future as a lawyer. Contrast: The African-American Agnes is stopped by a white policeman on her way home from her first date. Does she even have a future?

Regina Porter wrote a dense novel about two families, two skin colours and the common longing for reconciliation – and in doing so she astutely explores today’s America and its traumas of racism and inequality. “Pure happiness” is what the Guardian says about the debut of this great new voice of world literature.

Regina Porter studied at the renowned Iowa Writer’s Workshop; she is an award-winning playwright. She was born in Savannah, Georgia and now lives in Brooklyn.
