George Ellis

  • Fundamental Issues of Cosmology
  • Lecture

Physical cosmology is concerned with the nature of the universe on the largest scale: What exists? How did it become what it is? Cosmologists have created a successful model of the geometry and evolution of the visible universe, from the Big Bang to the present era. But even this sophisticated model has gaps. Here, philosophical assumptions set the tone: their relationship to meaning and purpose and their relationship to life as it has been understood over the centuries.

George F. R. Ellis is a cosmologist and professor of applied mathematics. He is considered one of the world’s leading cosmologists. In addition to his more than 200 scientific publications on cosmology and relativity, he is the author, with Stephen Hawking, of the standard work The Large Scale Structure of Space Time. He is an active Quaker and anti-apartheid activist.
