  • Life in the Universe: A New Perspective
  • Geist Heidelberg, Lecture

The discovery of an impressive variety of exoplanets has fundamentally changed our understanding of the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Didier Queloz shows how these discoveries have reshaped our view of the universe, why planetary systems like our own may be very rare, and what new perspectives this opens up for the exploration of distant worlds. At the same time, this touches on one of the most fascinating questions in science: How can we search for life beyond Earth—and what does this search reveal about the origin of life on our own planet?

Swiss astronomer Prof. Dr. Didier Queloz conducts research at ETH Zurich and the University of Cambridge. Together with Michel Mayor, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the first extrasolar planet orbiting a sun-like star. His discovery sparked a revolution in our understanding of planetary systems.
