Since March of this year, completely new words have entered our everyday language: terms such as “epidemiology”, “rate of reproduction” and above all the term “social distance”. Against the background of the coronavirus, people speak differently to each other, scientific terms are coming to the fore – and many statements oscillate between high complexity and the indeterminable, still unknown.

What does literature have to say about all this? Poetry in particular, for which images, comparisons, moods are important? Which, more than other genres, devotes itself to form, whose art is also an art of concentration, distillation?

The young poet Carolin Callies will present her new poetry collection schatullen & bredouillen and talk about her writing and her various literary activities, e.g. as co-initiator of the Ladenburg Literature Days. Her debut five senses &only a cutlery set was the lyrical event of the year 2015 – even literary critics agreed on that. In the current book, “measured, populated, postponed or deleted”; the poet plays wildly with onomatopoeia, with verse and rhythm.

Carolin Callies, born 1980, lives in Ladenburg. She publishes in magazines and anthologies, translates poems from French, Kurdish, Latvian and Spanish. In 2015 she was a finalist in the Heidelberg Clemens Brentano Prize, and in the same year she received the Thaddäus Troll Prize. Furthermore, her website tells us: “Two cats. One big wall of books. One man. One child.”
