Rap Poetry with Dalibor Marković

  • Workshop: Young people write their own rap lyrics about heroic stories - guided by a well-known rap poet.
  • Theme: Fairy tales and myths
  • Literature, Program for children, Workshop

Dalibor Marković has been performing his spoken word poetry on German and international stages for over fifteen years. His basis is hip-hop, the beginning was in poetry slam, but the Frankfurt native with Croatian roots has long performed as a sound poet, beatboxer and lyricist.

He sees himself as a “one-man theater”. On stage, outbursts of rage are followed by quiet passages. Very quickly he breaks up listening habits. Dalibor Marković writes poetry and gives poetry workshops at universities and theaters. In 2015 he was the winner of the Slam Symphony – together with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra – and in 2019 he won the Opera Slam.

Workshop description

“Write yourself free – from the letter to the stage text”.

Depending on the time available, the workshop will be divided into several units that build on each other and serve as an introduction to writing a finished stage text. In order to make it easier for the students (SuS) to get started and to minimize possible basic concerns about their own writing success, an increase in the level of difficulty is to be suggested for each unit. This is made vivid in the form of the given topic, in that the first unit, for example, revolves around the “letter,” the tiniest component of an overall text. The hierarchical structure, however, is by no means to be understood linearly, but rather circularly. Each new topic encircles the previous one, thus increasing per unit the understanding and skills necessary for writing a stage text. The unit topics are:

  1. Letter
    (Leipogram, alphabet poems)
  1. Syllable
    (haiku, rhythm exercises)
  1. Word
    (one-word story, two-word title)
  1. Writing
    (writing exercises, deletions)
  1. Voice
    (speaking style, body language)
  1. Stage text
    (lecture, event)

In each unit, a wide range of examples and instructions will be provided to introduce the topic. The focus will be on creating new experiences per unit that can be drawn upon as the unit progresses. A desired goal will be the creation of short writing results that can later be reused in the same way or incorporated into the stage text in a modified form. With these tools, the students should learn how to write and perform a finished text for the stage.
