Musical Sunday

  • Georg Philipp Telemann: The Day of Judgment
  • Marcus Imbsweiler & Timo Jouko Herrmann
  • Concert, Literature

Telemann’s effective, theatrical “Singgedicht” about the end of the world was composed in 1762 as one of the last great works by the aged composer. In four contemplations, the oratorio, decorated with late Baroque opulence, depicts the horrors of the Last Judgement. Personified, unbelief, reason, mockery and devotion enter into a philosophical dialog with the evangelist John and finally with Jesus himself about guilt and atonement, redemption and damnation. The visually stunning text inspired the over 80-year-old Telemann to create a sonorous work for his old age, in which he was once again able to pull out all the stops.

At Musical Sunday at the DAI Heidelberg, two music enthusiasts will have their say and delve deep into the respective works with the audience: Marcus Imbsweiler publishes novels and short stories; Timo Jouko Herrmann is a composer and guest conductor of the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra.
