Cinema!

  • Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
  • The Oscar-winning director on the great films of today
  • Literature

As a five-year-old boy Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck found himself, quite by mistake, in a cinema showing of the German silent film, “Varieté”. Since then he has known only one passion – cinema!

Today, Henckel will tell us when it’s best for a soundtrack composer to ignore the instructions of a film director, he’ll explain why David Hockney is set to revolutionise cinema, and why, in view of the huge marketing-power of American film studios, it might be time to introduce a German film quota.

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, born in 1973, studied Film Directing at the University of Television and Film in Munich (Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film in München). In 2007, he won an Oscar for his film, “The Life of Others”, (Das Leben der Anderen) which had been nominated in the category of “best foreign language film”.
