Every day, billions of digital photographs are produced and archived worldwide. These images, consisting of metadata and pixels, are considered the raw material of the future. They can be evaluated, filtered, programmed and controlled. They can even be used to develop artificial intelligence. Armin Linke and Estelle Blaschke make the examination of this flood of image data the subject of their new project “Image Capital”. Together with Sabine Süsstrunk, who specializes in computer-assisted photography, among other things, the project will focus – beyond art – on the role of photography within social, economic and cultural practices.

Background:
What is the relationship between artistic photography and science? Renowned photographic artists* and scientists* from various disciplines will discuss this issue from 16 January to 2 April 2020 in the eight-part international dialogue series “Photography & Science”. The artistic works form the starting point for a cross-disciplinary questioning of the medium and show the potential of photography to blur both areas together.
