Peace negotiations between the Colombian government of President Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP) reached a final agreement on August 24, 2016. A revised peace deal was ratified by Congress on November 30, 2016. After disarmament, FARC became a political party and participated in the 2018 elections.
But the Special Jurisdiction for Peace and the Truth Commission have lagged due to delays in the approval of implementing legislation. The Constitutional Court has upheld most of the implementing legislation. In August, President Ivan Duque took office. He pushed for an amendment to the legislation concerning the Jurisdiction for Peace for the military but pledged to continue with implementation of the Peace Agreement. What are the challenges ahead?
