The human brain is the most complex organ that nature has produced and its study represents a major challenge for science. In 2013, J\u00fcrgen Knoblich’s laboratory successfully cultivated the first model for early human brain development, known as “brain organoids”. This makes it possible for the first time to grow organoids from stem cells in order to study the influence of genes on development and the development of disease – a real revolution in medicine. Since then, Knoblich has been working intensively on a number of diseases such as epilepsy, schizophrenia, autism, addictive behavior and brain tumors.<\/p>\n

Prof. Dr. J\u00fcrgen Knoblich<\/strong>, born in Memmingen in 1963, heads the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) in Vienna. The stem cell researcher is considered one of the pioneers in the field of organoid research and has done ground-breaking work in the development of this new technology.<\/p>\n
