The climate crisis is causing problems for the forest, not only in Germany but worldwide. Caused by climate extremes, trees are currently dying on all continents and this raises questions about the future of the forest.
\nWhat should the forest of the future look like, how should it be designed? Particularly in Germany, this topic is often treated very emotionally, and findings and facts are pushed into the background.
\nHartmann outlines the general situation of the forest and explains the basic mechanisms that lead to the death of trees during climate extremes. Building on these connections, he sheds light on the social discourse surrounding the forest situation in Germany and shows how science and society can work out strategies to shape the forest of the future.<\/p>\n

After completing his military service in the German Armed Forces, Dr. Henrik Hartmann emigrated to Canada, where he lived for several years in a cabin in the forest – and discovered his love for the same.
\nAn apprenticeship as a forester was followed by a bachelor’s degree in forestry (New Brunswick) and a doctorate in forest ecology (Montreal). In 2009, he returned to Germany, where he is head of the research group “Allocation in Plants” at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry and investigates physiological responses of trees to climate extremes – at the same time the subject of his habilitation at TUM. Hartmann is coordinator of the IUFRO Task Force on Monitoring of global tree mortality<\/a> and the International Tree Mortality Network.<\/a> Both initiatives address tree mortality on a global scale.<\/p>\n
