The DAI Heidelberg is a cultural institution that offers a broad range of cultural activities and numerous services. Originally founded in 1946 as a library, it became the America House in 1947 and has since 1962 served as the German-American Institute on Sofienstraße; a central place of intercultural encounter and intellectual exchange in Heidelberg.
Our cultural program provides you with information and entertainment in the form of lectures, discussions, seminars, exhibitions, concerts, literary readings, films, theater performances and much more.
In our public library you will find an extensive collection of English-language books, magazines, videos and DVDs. You can also use our PC workstations to do research in our current magazine and newspaper databases. Our trained staff is, of course, happy to assist you.
The library maintains an extensive EducationUSA advising center supported by the US State Department which provides information on educational programs in the United States. The advising services are focused on the interests of high school students (exchange, language courses), university students and young professionals (study programs, scholarships, internships, application assistance)
The One World Language School offers a wide range of English and Spanish language courses for children, students and adults.
Since September 2007, the DAI runs two very popular International kindergartens, which accommodate 150 children from 20 countries at two locations.
Our mission is to encourage and support the exchange and encounters with people and institutions from America and to promote scientific debate with the United States.
The sponsoring organization of the DAI Heidelberg is the Schurman Foundation. It is named after the former US ambassador and patron of the University of Heidelberg, Jacob Gould Schurman (1854 – 1942).
As you can see, we offer an interesting and varied program, as well as a wide range of information and services. Please come visit us. We look forward to meeting you!
