80 years old, more relevant than ever

Since its founding in 1946, the DAI Heidelberg has been exploring the question of how democracy can succeed in the long term. While the answers have evolved steadily over the past 80 years, its foundation remains unchanged: a diverse, democratic society thrives on interaction. It needs people who engage in dialogue about the opportunities and challenges of our time, who share different opinions and listen to one another. And who shape society together, in both private and public spheres.

Opening windows to other worlds

Discovering new perspectives and cultures, listening, discussing—and even debating passionately: The DAI Heidelberg stands for pluralism and promotes the exchange of diverse experiences and viewpoints. Its educational programs, social activities, conferences, and festivals explore language and literature, science and society, music and film, as well as participation, democracy, and social cohesion.
Together with an international team and a strong network, we develop programs and formats that bring people from the region and around the world together.

Rooted in the region, connected globally

Curiosity, openness, and diversity: At the DAI, it’s all about sharing and communicating thoughts and experiences, facts, and research findings. Together, we address important social questions:  

• How can we engage in dialogue and sustain it? 

• What does it take to coexist respectfully in a diverse society? 

• How can we successfully negotiate binding core values for peaceful coexistence in a changing world?
