Writers’ Room Heidelberg goes Hollywood – Inside the Writers’ Room The DAI and the project Writers’ Room Reading audiences are dwindling worldwide, but new author series are recording rapidly increasing audience numbers: Epic “quality series” are being treated in current German feuilletons as novels of the 21st century. Germany is lagging behind, while other countries have long been out of sight: Series productions of outstanding quality from the USA (e.g. on private channels like HBO or Netflix) and Scandinavia – especially Denmark (e.g. on public channels like DR1)- raise the question why highly subsidized German television does not achieve anything of the kind. As part of Heidelberg’s nomination as a “Literary City” in the UNESCO programme “Creative Cities”, the project “Heidelberg goes Hollywood – Inside the Writers’ Room” is being launched and expanded. The DAI’s aim was thus to launch a creative project alongside its diverse literary programme in order to write high-quality contributions for a new German or European television landscape.
