Places are allocated at the end of April or the beginning of May of each year at the latest. The places are allocated according to various criteria. Preference is given to siblings and children with an international background, and the date of registration is also decisive. In addition, we naturally take into account the age of the children and the current group structure, such as the number of boys and girls. In the case of the Neuenheim institution, priority is given to children resident in Neuenheim. In contrast, the kindergarten in the old town can also accept children from other districts. We will inform you by e-mail or telephone whether or not you have been allocated a place. You will help us a lot if you let us know if you are on the waiting list but are no longer interested in a place in our kindergarten.

Childcare contract
As soon as you have received a place in the kindergarten, we will inform you by telephone or in writing and send you a contract for care. To sign the contract, please make an appointment with Brigitte Kipke at the DAI administration. Send an E-Mail The opening hours are from Monday to Friday between 9:30 and 15:30 in the DAI Administration, Sofienstraße 12, 69115 Heidelberg. The children do handicrafts together, go to bigger and smaller excursions and mainly play. All instructions are given in English, the planning and design of the holiday camp is subject to the native speaker teacher. Although the grammar should not be neglected, the understanding of communication is in the foreground. On the other hand, during the Holiday crash course the active repetition of school material is the main objective. Students are divided according to grade levels, although usually two grades are combined. Each group consists of a maximum of seven participants. In small groups the students practice the speaking of English, writing and reading and repeat grammar and vocabulary. However, we do not forget the fun – our teachers use a variety of media and age-appropriate games in language teaching.

What should my child bring to the Holiday camp?
Your child should bring:

Lunch and snacks for in between

Medication, if needed

A drinking bottle, which can be regularly filled by us

A paint smock, if needed

A Maxx-Ticket or a student ticket if available

We provide water, juices, apples and small snacks such as granola bars. Please inform our teachers of allergies, should your child have any. We also provide teaching materials

Does the Holiday camp offer lunch?
Unfortunately, no. We provide water, juices, apples and small snacks such as granola bars. Please advise our teachers of allergies, should your child have any. We do not have the facilities to prepare a hot lunch. Since each child brings its own lunch, the teachers have the opportunity to go picnicking with their groups should the weather allow it.

How can I pay for the course fees?
You can either grant us a direct debit mandate or pay cash at the Language school on the first or second day of the course. All adult courses are held in our class rooms at Adenauerplatz 1. Our premises are located on the 3rd floor. The Holiday camp is usually in the great hall of the DAI Heidelberg at Sofienstraße 12. If we change the location, we will inform you in advance by via e-mail. The Holiday Intensive Courses take place in our class rooms at Adenauerplatz 1 or in the DAI Heidelberg at Sofienstraße 12. We will inform you of the location in advance by e-mail.

What happens if my child or I cannot participate due to illness?
The fees will be refunded only if the cancellation is made eight days before the beginning of the course. A medical certificate (also) does not change anything. If you or your child cannot attend the course, please let us know in advance. We will then pass it through to the appropriate teacher. In case young children stay away from the course without excuse, we will contact the parents immediately. If you or your child should have a contagious disease, we ask you to stay away from the course.

Is it a disadvantage, if my child has little knowledge of English?
No. Our OWLS courses and our holiday offers are structured in a way that children can participate with different levels of English. During the summer holidays we have, for example, many children in the Holiday camp, who neither have German nor English as their mother tongue as well as children who come from an English-speaking family. Even if your child has little or no knowledge of English, the playful communication and the experience of our teachers are the perfect atmosphere for the first contact with the new language.

Do the teachers actually speak English to the children?
Yes. Our native-speaking teachers design the program in English. However, we always have assistants in the courses that can also speak German. That way, we can also discuss difficult issues in German.

The course has already begun – can I still participate?
Children can begin our OWLS and bilinguals courses at any time if there is space in the corresponding group. If you are interested you can contact us here! Even if there is a registration deadline for the conversation courses for adults, you can still participate even after the beginning of the course, if there is still a free place. All other adult courses build on one another and cannot be joined during the course.

Do you dispatch teachers to schools and kindergartens to regularly teach a group there?
In case of a group size of five to eight children, we like to dispatch our teachers to schools or kindergartens to teach English before or after the regular school or kindergarten lessons. Please ensure that a suitable room is available beforehand. If you are interested you can contact us here!
  • HD Ink – ideas on paper!
    • About usUnfortunately, children with a migration background are far too often left speechless and fall by the wayside at school. With our support we want to help these children to overcome language barriers. We want these children and young people to develop a positive relationship with the German language and learn to use it creatively, confidently and safely. Our initiative was inspired by the American project “826 Valencia” by the American author Dave Eggers. More information about the author’s work with immigrant children can be found here. Since its foundation in 2010, the project HD Ink – Ideas on Paper! has been extremely popular. Over 90 children have already been cared for and supported by our dedicated volunteer tutors. The children and young people come from different parts of the world: Rwanda, Russia, Tunisia, Albania and Turkey are just a few examples of this diversity of nations. In cooperation with schools in the region, we soon learned that strengthening language skills is important for all children. We have recognized the enthusiasm with which children are involved when they are allowed to write their own works under guidance and thereby give free rein to their creativity and imagination. Therefore we have extended our offer and now offer writing workshops for all children and teenagers.

In the HD Ink writing workshops and tutorials, the children and young people do this in their very own, special way. This year’s motto was “We children have rights”. Numerous institutions and associations offered various games and join-in activities for children. The DAI was also represented with HD Ink. At our stand, bookmarks could be made or children could take part in a writing workshop. What superpower do you have? How can you make the world a better place? On a postcard, the children could express their imaginative thoughts by means of a drawing or a text and send it to a loved one. The focus of the children was always the climate and its protection, sports and love. As a reward, the children could take a bag of popcorn and a raffle ticket for our raffle, which was filled with many wonderful prizes.
Writing Workshop “At Home” (February 2019)
What does “home” mean to me? Is it a place, special people or maybe a feeling that makes me think of home? In our writing workshop in February 2019, the children and young people asked themselves these questions and created texts from them. Home, that is for Emma where her family is and the colorful chaos of her room surrounds her. Sali thinks of all the familiar things in her everyday life. For her, being at home means the colorful hustle and bustle in the schoolyard, her dancing lessons and her friends. Shulei writes about our future home in a world that is no longer populated by humans alone, but where robots also have their say. What home means to someone who has to leave home and doesn’t know where this journey will lead to is told by Ghalia, who fled with her family from Syria to Germany. In familiar and unfamiliar worlds, we set out in search of the many facets of “home”.

“Mein Zuhause” (Emma, 9 Jahre)

“Über mich” (Sali, 8 Jahre)

“Zwei Welten” (Shu Lei, 14 Jahre)

“Peanutbutter” (Ghalia, 16 Jahre)

Writing workshop “A journey through the oceans” (May 2019)
The ocean is endless and consists of so many different landscapes that we humans can never fully travel. It is exactly such multifaceted places of the ocean that we reported on in our writing workshop. We travel through the oceans. An exciting journey, in which we see the ocean from many perspectives that we have never seen before. What happens in the depths of the ocean, in a world often still unexplored? What can we tell the people out there about this world? In the workshop we ourselves became divers through the sea and wrote messages about what we experienced in the ocean.
Writing Workshop “News from the Ocean” (June 2019)

For World Oceans Day 2019, we have brought the most diverse marine creatures to life on paper. We put ourselves in the position of these beings and told from the depths of the ocean about our special life. For this purpose we designed postcards on which we formulated messages to the people. • MakerspaceYou have innovative ideas, but don’t have the tools to turn your ideas into a reality? Come explore the DAI Makerspace! We offer a wide variety of tools, machines and 3D-Printers for you to further your skills and work with experienced tinkerers, following the motto “Learning by Doing – together”. Work on whatever your heart desirers, be it a replacement part for a rare item or a robotic vacuum cleaner, everything is possible. Besides working on personal projects, we also focus on furthering communication and cooperation within the community. Sharing information and continuous improvement create new possibilities for everyone. The doors to the Makerspace are open to the public on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. We offer monthly workshops and more flexible opening hours for members with more experience. Why don’t you stop by and take a look? Have you heard: Since the Makerspace’s founding in 2015, our creative space has grown into a large community. In order to still be able to accommodate everyone, we are making the Makerspace our central element in the DAI’s new Begeisterhaus, located at the Heidelberg Innovation Park (hip).
