one-to-one care

1 zu 1 Betreuung

one-to-one care

Our one-to-one care is aimed primarily at children whose mother tongue is not German and those who have a learning disability and are therefore dependent on extracurricular support. In our programme we offer children individually tailored language, reading and writing support. Each child admitted to the project receives personal one-to-one support from selected tutors. The aim of the project is to strengthen the linguistic and social skills of the children through individual support and thus to promote their social integration.
Our dedicated volunteer tutors meet with the children once or twice a week, assist with reading and writing texts and help with questions. The attention given to the children by their tutor also strengthens their self-confidence.
If you are interested, parents, children and dedicated tutors can contact us at any time. You can find the contact details here.

Our interactive writing workshop

In our writing workshops, children and young people immerse themselves in the world of literature. With the help of various media and literary role models, they learn about elements of a narrative. In small groups they work on narrative techniques. They can put what they have learned into practice at every stage of their workshop trip and shape their own history.

The aim of the writing workshop is for the participants to increase their ability to express themselves creatively and playfully and to take their own story home with them.

– For pupils, school classes and youth groups
– One time four hours
– Topics by arrangement

If you and your class would like to participate in a workshop, please send us an e-mail.

Writing workshops in schools

Our tutors go to schools and work with students on language and expression skills. Especially for children with a migration background, care in small groups is of great benefit.

If you and your class would like to participate in a workshop, please send us an e-mail.

    • Registration & placementHere you can find all information on registration and placement, as well as on the contract.
Registration
You can register your child without commitment for the International Kindergarten of the DAI Heidelberg. Please fill out the registration form and send it via e-mail, fax or post to: DAI Heidelberg z. Hd. Frau Ingrid Stolz Sofienstraße 12 69115 Heidelberg Tel.: +49 (0) 6221 607320 Fax: +49 (0) 6221 607373 Send E-Mail
Registration form
Formular Deutsch (pdf) Formular English (pdf) You will receive a confirmation e-mail after your application has been received by us and are therefore automatically on the waiting list, if there is not already an available place for your child.

Placement
The places will be assigned in late April or early May every year at the latest. Various criteria are taken into account. Siblings and children with an international background are preferred, just as important is the date of registration. In addition, we consider the age of the children and the current group structure, such as the number of boys and girls. At the Neuenheim location, children from the Neuenheim district have priority. The kindergarten in the old town, however, can also accommodate children from other districts. We will inform you via e-mail or telephone if you have received a place or not. Please inform us if you are on the waiting list but no longer are interested in a place at our kindergarten.

Contract
Once you have been assigned a place at our kindergarten, we will notify you by phone or by letter, and send you a contract. To sign the contract, please make an appointment at the DAI management with Mrs. Kipke. Send E-Mail The opening times for this are from Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm in the DAI administration, Sofienstraße 12, 69115 Heidelberg. The directions can be found here. Reduced contributions. Applications for reduced contributions must be submitted with the application (see registration form). To do this, please bring proof of income of both parents to the signing of the contract. In addition, the respective kindergarten will contact you and make an appointment for you to get to know the respective caregiver. Furthermore, you will receive a list of all items you will need to bring and have the opportunity to clarify any questions you may have
Lunch
If you want your child to eat lunch at the kindergarten, please contact VitCatering. They will send you a bill independently from the kindergarten. The meals are not included in the contributions to the kindergarten.
Contact
VitCatering Marienhütte Elisabethenweg 2 69117 Heidelberg Tel.: +49 (0) 6221 7284736 Send E-Mail

The children do handicrafts together, go to bigger and smaller excursions and mainly play. All instructions are given in English, the planning and design of the holiday camp is subject to the native speaker teacher. Although the grammar should not be neglected, the understanding of communication is in the foreground. On the other hand, during the Holiday crash course the active repetition of school material is the main objective. Students are divided according to grade levels, although usually two grades are combined. Each group consists of a maximum of seven participants. In small groups the students practice the speaking of English, writing and reading and repeat grammar and vocabulary. However, we do not forget the fun – our teachers use a variety of media and age-appropriate games in language teaching.

What should my child bring to the Holiday camp?
Your child should bring:

Lunch and snacks for in between

Medication, if needed

A drinking bottle, which can be regularly filled by us

A paint smock, if needed

A Maxx-Ticket or a student ticket if available

We provide water, juices, apples and small snacks such as granola bars. Please inform our teachers of allergies, should your child have any. We also provide teaching materials

Does the Holiday camp offer lunch?
Unfortunately, no. We provide water, juices, apples and small snacks such as granola bars. Please advise our teachers of allergies, should your child have any. We do not have the facilities to prepare a hot lunch. Since each child brings its own lunch, the teachers have the opportunity to go picnicking with their groups should the weather allow it.

How can I pay for the course fees?
You can either grant us a direct debit mandate or pay cash at the Language school on the first or second day of the course. Please note that the course fee cannot be transferred.

Where are the various courses taking place?
If not otherwise noted, the weekly children and youth courses will be held in our class rooms at Adenauerplatz 1. Our premises are located on the 3rd floor. Please use the side entrance, which is located in the drive way between the Deutsche Bank and the DAI Heidelberg. All adult courses are held in our class rooms at Adenauerplatz 1. Our premises are located on the 3rd floor. Please use the side entrance, which is located in the drive way between the Deutsche Bank and the DAI Heidelberg. The Holiday camp is usually in the great hall of the DAI Heidelberg at Sofienstraße 12. If we change the location, we will inform you in advance by via e-mail. The Holiday Intensive Courses take place in our class rooms at Adenauerplatz 1 or in the DAI Heidelberg at Sofienstraße 12. We will inform you of the location in advance by e-mail.

What happens if my child or I cannot participate due to illness?
The fees will be refunded only if the cancellation is made eight days before the beginning of the course. Since we are working with very small groups and organize and engage our staff according to the number of registrations, we will unfortunately have to charge the full course fee in the event of sickness at short notice cancellations. A medical certificate (also) does not change anything. If you or your child cannot attend the course, please let us know in advance. We will then pass it through to the appropriate teacher. In case young children stay away from the course without excuse, we will contact the parents immediately. If you or your child should have a contagious disease, we ask you to stay away from the course.

Is it a disadvantage, if my child has little knowledge of English?
No. Our OWLS courses and our holiday offers are structured in a way that children can participate with different levels of English. During the summer holidays we have, for example, many children in the Holiday camp, who neither have German nor English as their mother tongue as well as children who come from an English-speaking family. Even if your child has little or no knowledge of English, the playful communication and the experience of our teachers are the perfect atmosphere for the first contact with the new language.

Do the teachers actually speak English to the children?
Yes. Our native-speaking teachers design the program in English. However, we always have assistants in the courses that can also speak German. That way, we can also discuss difficult issues in German.

The course has already begun – can I still participate?
Children can begin our OWLS and bilinguals courses at any time if there is space in the corresponding group. If you are interested you can contact us here! Even if there is a registration deadline for the conversation courses for adults, you can still participate even after the beginning of the course, if there is still a free place. All other adult courses build on one another and cannot be joined during the course.

Do you dispatch teachers to schools and kindergartens to regularly teach a group there?
In case of a group size of five to eight children, we like to dispatch our teachers to schools or kindergartens to teach English before or after the regular school or kindergarten lessons. Please ensure that a suitable room is available beforehand. If you are interested you can contact us here!
  • HD Ink – Put your ideas on paper!
    • About usFar too often children with migrant backgrounds don’t dare to speak up and as a result are left behind in school. With our support, we hope to help these children overcome language barriers. We want these children and young people to develop a positive attitude towards the German language and learn how to use it creatively, confidently and correctly. Our initiative was inspired by American author Dave Eggers’ project “826 Valencia”. For more information about the author’s work with immigrant children, click here. Since its foundation in 2010, the project HD Ink – Put your ideas on paper! has become increasingly popular. About 90 children have been cared for and supported by our dedicated volunteer/voluntary tutors. The children and young people come from different parts of the world: Rwanda, Russia, Tunisia, Albania and Turkey are just a few examples of this diversity of nations. In cooperation with schools in the region, we have quickly learned that strong language skills are important for all children. We have noticed how enthusiastic children become when writing their own works under guidance and allowing their creativity and imagination full reign. Therefore, we are now offer writing workshops for all children and young people.

Please ask Ms. Sabani for the exact dates. In our writer’s lab, children and young people will be immersed into the world of literature. They will get to know the elements of a narrative using different media and literary role models. In small groups, they will develop storytelling techniques. They can implement everything they learned at every stage of their workshop and create their own story. Each child who is admitted to the project will receive personal one-on-one assistance by a selected tutor. The aim of the project is to strengthen the linguistic and social skills of children through individual support and thus to promote their integration into society. Our dedicated volunteer tutors meet once or twice a week with the children, help them with the reading and the writing of texts and with any questions they may have. The one-on-one attention the children receive from their tutors is itself a confindence booster. If interested, parents, children and committed tutors can get in touch with us. • Young Writers’ RoomIf you want to get creative, most fields of the arts have got you covered: If you want to dance, make music, or act, there’s sure to be a group, band or troupe for you out there. But what if your higher calling is writing? Where do you go if your pen is the brush with which you create worlds of wonder? This deficit is where the DAI comes in: In October of 2015, we started a project called the Young Writers’ Room, where a select group of young writers creates TV series. Following in the footsteps of both the revolutionary methods across the pond as well as the DAI’s very own professional writers’ room, members of this workshop can find like-minded young writers, feed off each other and live out their creative natures.
