Child holiday care at the DAI Heidelberg

Zeitraum:

Jeweils von 9:00 Uhr bis 14:00 Uhr

Feedback zur Ferienbetreuung 2021

Rückmeldungen von Eltern:

“Thanks so much for the wonderful, well-structured and creative holiday program, and particularly your lovely manner with the children. I think creative writing and craft in a friendly small group like this with constant encouragement is a really beneficial particularly for kids with difficult backgrounds. And a nature theme is always important and fun.
It’s incredible that the kids all wanted to be early to „class“ because they loved it so much! A credit to you all.
My son loved it and wants to join again. “

“Alexandru had a great time last week. You and your colleagues are doing a wonderful job.
Thank you again! “

(Majd, 9J.)

Places are allocated at the end of April or the beginning of May of each year at the latest. The places are allocated according to various criteria. Preference is given to siblings and children with an international background, and the date of registration is also decisive. In addition, we naturally take into account the age of the children and the current group structure, such as the number of boys and girls. In the case of the Neuenheim institution, priority is given to children resident in Neuenheim. In contrast, the kindergarten in the old town can also accept children from other districts. We will inform you by e-mail or telephone whether or not you have been allocated a place. You will help us a lot if you let us know if you are on the waiting list but are no longer interested in a place in our kindergarten.

Childcare contract
As soon as you have received a place in the kindergarten, we will inform you by telephone or in writing and send you a contract for care. To sign the contract, please make an appointment with Brigitte Kipke at the DAI administration. Send an E-Mail The opening hours are from Monday to Friday between 9:30 and 15:30 in the DAI Administration, Sofienstraße 12, 69115 Heidelberg. The bilingual community school (initially grades 1–10 with an option for an upper school) offers all-day classes and builds on the work of the DAI’s international kindergartens. https://youtu.be/Ecr4vk_xMXo
The DAI International School Mission Statement and Educational values
The International DAI School is a non-profit independent school; with the connection to the community at the heart of the school. We believe that every child matters and through their innate curiosity and scaffolded deeper learning; we can help to ensure that all of our students reach their full potential. We believe every journey should be guided by curiosity – at times the journey is more important than the destination. In our school we value the method of inquiry with equal importance. We believe in preparing our students for the real world; to recognise and understand its complexities and interconnectedness. We are all lifelong learners; our school is a safe environment for students to develop and try out new ideas – learning from each other’s successes and setbacks. We believe that we should celebrate our individual potential and work together to create a flourishing community.

Our values
Our school is committed to the values of RESPECT, KINDNESS and TOLERANCE. The aim is to treat ethics as a main subject, i.e. not to limit it to the weekly lesson or double lesson, but to let it intersperse all areas of school life. A student parliament, the class council, the subject “Freedom & Responsibility” and later on the subject “Future” are part of this understanding, as well as the examination of central philosophical ideas, which are discussed with the students in an age-appropriate manner. Making our values the concrete basis of our dealings with each other and weaving them into our everyday school life is the big goal.

Our concept
Bilingual; International & Project – Oriented The International DAI School is a BILINGUAL SCHOOL; classes are held in German and English. Previous knowledge of the other language is not necessary. The goal is for the children to be able to express themselves well and confidently in both languages by the end of primary school. The lessons follow the Baden-Württemberg curriculum while incorporating the Cambridge Curriculum. Children and teachers of DIFFERENT NATIONS learn together in SMALL CLASSES: around 20 children per group and a German-English team of teachers teach in pairs during the core periods of the morning. As in the DAI kindergartens, the focus is on fostering children’s curiosity and JOY IN LEARNING. In cooperation with the Institute of Educational Science at the University of Heidelberg, teaching and learning methods are at the center of lessons that have proven to be particularly beneficial in a worldwide comparison. These include, in addition to large amounts of movement, above all PROJECT-BASED LEARNING and the DEEPER LEARNING method.
BEGEISTERSCHULE The DAI’s main objective is to ensure that children enjoy learning and developing their talents – after all, the school will be based in the BEGEISTERHAUS. On the site of the Heidelberg Innovation Park (hip), formerly known as Patton Barracks, the Begeisterhaus will be a creative center for the entire city that is unique in Germany. We will offer a wide range of activities for children and young people; from the Makerspace to the Art Space, the Language and Poetry Lab to the Astronomy Tower, it offers the students of the International DAI School Heidelberg privileged access to outstanding and inspiring learning opportunities. You can download a short presentation of the International School of the DAI.

  • HD Ink – ideas on paper!
    • About usUnfortunately, children with a migration background are far too often left speechless and fall by the wayside at school. With our support we want to help these children to overcome language barriers. We want these children and young people to develop a positive relationship with the German language and learn to use it creatively, confidently and safely. Our initiative was inspired by the American project “826 Valencia” by the American author Dave Eggers. More information about the author’s work with immigrant children can be found here. Since its foundation in 2010, the project HD Ink – Ideas on Paper! has been extremely popular. Over 90 children have already been cared for and supported by our dedicated volunteer tutors. The children and young people come from different parts of the world: Rwanda, Russia, Tunisia, Albania and Turkey are just a few examples of this diversity of nations. In cooperation with schools in the region, we soon learned that strengthening language skills is important for all children. We have recognized the enthusiasm with which children are involved when they are allowed to write their own works under guidance and thereby give free rein to their creativity and imagination. Therefore we have extended our offer and now offer writing workshops for all children and teenagers.

This year’s motto was “We children have rights”. Numerous institutions and associations offered various games and join-in activities for children. The DAI was also represented with HD Ink. At our stand, bookmarks could be made or children could take part in a writing workshop. What superpower do you have? How can you make the world a better place? On a postcard, the children could express their imaginative thoughts by means of a drawing or a text and send it to a loved one. The focus of the children was always the climate and its protection, sports and love. As a reward, the children could take a bag of popcorn and a raffle ticket for our raffle, which was filled with many wonderful prizes.
Writing Workshop “At Home” (February 2019)
What does “home” mean to me? Is it a place, special people or maybe a feeling that makes me think of home? In our writing workshop in February 2019, the children and young people asked themselves these questions and created texts from them. Home, that is for Emma where her family is and the colorful chaos of her room surrounds her. Sali thinks of all the familiar things in her everyday life. For her, being at home means the colorful hustle and bustle in the schoolyard, her dancing lessons and her friends. Shulei writes about our future home in a world that is no longer populated by humans alone, but where robots also have their say. What home means to someone who has to leave home and doesn’t know where this journey will lead to is told by Ghalia, who fled with her family from Syria to Germany. In familiar and unfamiliar worlds, we set out in search of the many facets of “home”.

“Mein Zuhause” (Emma, 9 Jahre)

“Über mich” (Sali, 8 Jahre)

“Zwei Welten” (Shu Lei, 14 Jahre)

“Peanutbutter” (Ghalia, 16 Jahre)

Writing workshop “A journey through the oceans” (May 2019)
The ocean is endless and consists of so many different landscapes that we humans can never fully travel. It is exactly such multifaceted places of the ocean that we reported on in our writing workshop. We travel through the oceans. An exciting journey, in which we see the ocean from many perspectives that we have never seen before. What happens in the depths of the ocean, in a world often still unexplored? What can we tell the people out there about this world? In the workshop we ourselves became divers through the sea and wrote messages about what we experienced in the ocean.
Writing Workshop “News from the Ocean” (June 2019)

For World Oceans Day 2019, we have brought the most diverse marine creatures to life on paper. We put ourselves in the position of these beings and told from the depths of the ocean about our special life. For this purpose we designed postcards on which we formulated messages to the people. Which sea creature are you? Where do you live in the sea? What do you experience there and what do you want to tell people about it?

Nachricht aus dem Ozean von Sali

Nachricht aus dem Ozean von Emma

The main pillar is the free one-to-one support by volunteer tutors who can respond to the special needs of the children. Corona-related school closures have had a devastating effect on children’s education. At times when meetings are not possible, we would like to give children from Heidelberg and the entire metropolitan region the opportunity to work with the German language at home. Because: The creative world of language can also be discovered online! We provideone-hour online courses, which were developed in cooperation with Marielle Auriga, lecturer for German as a foreign language and creative writing. Together with the children, tutors work through them online. Videos, audio files and exciting thematic worlds provide impulses for individual language development. After an introductory meeting with children and tutors on site at the DAI Heidelberg (or alternatively in an online meeting) and a short briefing, you can get started straight away.
Register now as a tutor for HD Ink – simply send an email to hd.ink@dai-heidelberg.de. We look forward to hearing from you!
