- Report from Beijing
- Lecture
How should the world deal with a new superpower? The West looks at China with a mixture of fear and naiveté – but how can we better understand a country whose complexity and contradictions defy all standards? And how do Chinese themselves view China’s rise?
Xifan Yang is China correspondent for Die Zeit and reports on political, economic and social transformations in the People’s Republic. Previously, she worked for Süddeutsche Zeitung, NZZ and Stern, among others. In 2016, she accompanied German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and in 2017 Sigmar Gabriel on government visits to China. In 2015, her family biographical non-fiction book about China Als die Karpfen fliegen lernten waspublished.
The conversation is led by Marina Rudyak, a sinologist at the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS) at Heidelberg University and a political consultant. She researches and publishes on China’s foreign aid and international development finance.
