And how do the Chinese themselves see China’s rise? Xifan Yang is China correspondent for Die Zeit and reports on political, economic and social transformations in the People’s Republic. She previously worked for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the NZZ and the Stern, among others. In 2016 she accompanied Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and in 2017 Sigmar Gabriel on government visits to China. In 2015 her family biographical non-fiction book about China Als die Karpfen fliegen lernen. The interview is conducted by Marina Rudyak, sinologist at the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS) at the University of Heidelberg and political consultant. She researches and publishes on China’s foreign aid and international development finance.
