Xifan Yang – MUST Eliminate SLEEP Sun, 14th June 2020, 10:30 am Report from Beijing What does China want in the 21st century? How should the world deal with a new superpower? The West looks at China with a mixture of fear and naivety – but how can a country be better understood, a country that in its complexity and contradictions goes beyond all standards? And how do the Chinese themselves see China’s rise? Xifan Yang is China correspondent for the period and reports on political, economic and social transformations in the People’s Republic. She previously worked for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the NZZ and the Stern, among others. In 2016 she accompanied Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and in 2017 Sigmar Gabriel on government visits to China. In 2015 her family biographical non-fiction book about China Als die Karpfen fliegen lernen. The interview is conducted by Marina Rudyak, sinologist at the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS) at the University of Heidelberg and political consultant. She researches and publishes on China’s foreign aid and international development finance.
